Alkandionat or carboxylic acid
Hydroxy carboxylic acids
This class of compounds in addition to containing a carboxylic group - C = O - OH also contain hydroxyl groups (- OH). Thus these compounds can be as acidic as well as alcohol is.

Alkandionat or carboxylic acid
Based on the number of group - C = O - OH in these compounds are distinguished:
a. Hydroxy acid monovalent
Alkandionat or carboxylic acid
This acid has only one group - C = O - OH
b. Hydroxy acid bivalent
These acids contain two groups - C = O - OH
c. Hydroxy acids of trivalent
Alkandionat or carboxylic acid
This acid group containing 3 - C = O - OH.
